日本の文学を英語で読むことが、英語の言い回しと日本語の違いを最もよく理解できます。本作は、夏目漱石の代表作で、高等遊民長井代助の苦悩を描いた１９０９年の朝日新聞連載の超有名作品です。
例えば以下の箇所は、日本語描写の最も精巧な英訳です。
''Suddenly, a red mailbox caught his eye. The red color immediately leaped into Daisuke's head and began spin around and around. An umbrella shop sign had four red umbrellas hanging one on top of the other. The color of these umbrellas also leaped into Daisuke's head and whirled around.'' (pp.297-8)
英語描写は、このように必ず大概念、大きな主体の特定から入り、次ぎにその運動へと細微にわたってこの箇所を英訳しています。
本書は、英訳の日本語小説においては必読の書です。
